What should you measure before using a room planner?
Measure the finished inside wall faces, not an area figure alone. Record doors, windows, columns, ledges, beams, level changes and fixed services. Mark each door swing and any access that must remain open.

How do you test a furniture layout?
Start with the largest fixed or hard-to-move item. Add each remaining item at its measured size. Then add clearance rectangles for door swings, wardrobes, pulled-out dining chairs or another project-specific working condition.
The overlap warning only identifies rectangles that occupy the same plan area. It does not know whether a gap is wide enough, a route is accessible or a door is safe. Review the plan with the intended users and the responsible designer.
Use these checks:
- Can every person enter, move, sit and leave during normal use?
- Can doors, drawers, shutters, appliances and equipment reach their working positions?
- Can windows, controls, sockets and service panels remain reachable?

This tool does not measure the property or validate the figures entered. It does not draw curved or angled walls, wall thickness, elevations, ceiling conditions, steps, plumbing, electrical work, structure or technical details. It does not prescribe minimum clearances or decide whether furniture is suitable.
A rectangle marked “clearance” is only a user-entered reminder. It is not an accessibility, fire, structural or building-code assessment. Ask the appropriate professional to establish requirements for the actual property and users.
Before purchase or construction, issue one checked plan with room dimensions, opening locations, exact product references, furniture dimensions, services and revision date. Worked example: testing a sofa and balcony route
Assume a rectangular living room is 12 feet wide and 10 feet long. The proposed sofa occupies 7 feet by 3 feet. A coffee table occupies 3 feet by 2 feet. The balcony door needs a 3-foot by 3-foot swing or access zone.
Enter the room first. Add the sofa, table and balcony zone as separate items. The example is not a recommended arrangement. It only shows how the same measurements can expose different results.

An overlap is a geometric fact about the entered rectangles. It is not a verdict about comfort or safety. A zero-overlap plan can still have a gap that is too small for its users or building requirements.
After the rectangles fit, print the plan and mark opening positions, fixed services and any non-rectangular condition by hand. Ask the project team to replace that early record with a verified drawing before purchases or work are released.
How does the room layout calculation work?
The tool uses one coordinate system. The top-left room corner is zero on both axes. Each item stores a left position, top position, width, depth and rotation.
When an item rotates by 90 or 270 degrees, the calculation exchanges its width and depth. At zero or 180 degrees, the entered width and depth stay in their original directions.
An item is outside the room when any part of its rectangle crosses the room boundary. Two items overlap when their horizontal spans and vertical spans both intersect. Rectangles that only touch at an edge are not counted as overlapping.
The drawing scale is chosen from the available canvas size and the entered room. It changes only how large the plan looks on screen. It does not change the measurements, positions or collision result.
This simple method is useful because it is visible and repeatable. It is also limited. It cannot represent curves, angled boundaries, wall thickness or the height of objects.

Can I plan a bedroom or living room?

Does an overlap mean the layout is wrong?
