Wallpaper is sold as a product but completed as work on a wall. A roll price does not show how much usable pattern it provides. An installation rate may exclude surface repair, old-covering removal, adhesive, delivery, high access or work around switches and corners.
This guide helps an owner measure a wallpaper quotation and compare it with painting. It does not recommend a product, diagnose a wall, provide an installation method or publish a current market rate. Ask the supplier and responsible installer to confirm suitability, preparation and current product information for the actual room.
What should be checked before pricing wallpaper?
Start with the wall, not a product image. Record visible cracks, loose paint, powdering, uneven repairs, stains, dampness and previous coverings. A mark does not prove its cause. Ask the appropriate responsible party to investigate an unresolved defect before a decorative finish hides it.
| Starting check | What to record | Why it changes cost |
|---|---|---|
| Wall condition | Sound, loose, uneven, cracked, stained or unresolved | Defines preparation or investigation |
| Existing finish | Paint, wallpaper, panel or bare substrate | May need removal or a separate preparation |
| Wall geometry | Width, height, corners, curves, niches and sloping edges | Changes measurement and fitting effort |
| Openings and fittings | Doors, windows, switches, sockets and fixed items | Changes deductions, cuts and coordination |
| Room use | Dry room, wet exposure, heat, cleaning and traffic | Affects suitability and maintenance questions |
| Site access | Furniture, height, working hours, lift and storage | Changes protection and logistics |
Do not assume wallpaper will solve a damp or failing wall. Decorative covering can hide the sign without correcting the source. Keep investigation and repair outside the wallpaper price until the responsible party defines them.
How is wallpaper area measured?
Measure each wall width and height in the same unit. Multiply width by height to find gross area. Deduct only the openings that the quotation agrees to exclude. Small openings may still require cutting and matching, so some installers do not deduct them.
| Measurement item | Record | Comparison question |
|---|---|---|
| Main wall | Finished width and height | Are dimensions measured on site? |
| Door or window | Width and height | Is it deducted or retained in the fitting area? |
| Niche or return | Each face separately | Is the return included in the main rate? |
| Repeated wall | Separate dimensions | Does the pattern continue between walls? |
| Feature area | Exact start and end | Who aligns it with furniture or joinery? |
| High or difficult area | Height and access condition | Is access equipment priced separately? |
Use the single room area calculator for inside length multiplied by width. Wall area needs a separate height measurement.
How is the number of wallpaper rolls calculated?
Read the width, length, pattern repeat and batch information on the exact product. Do not copy dimensions from a different wallpaper or assume every roll has the same coverage. A nominal roll area can be greater than its usable coverage after pattern matching and cutting.
The basic area check is:
net wall area divided by usable coverage per roll, rounded up to a whole roll
An area check is only a rough comparison. A drop calculation is stronger. Divide the papered wall width by the roll width and round up to get the full-height strips. Add the stated trimming allowance to the wall height. For a straight-match pattern, round that length up to a whole pattern repeat. Divide the roll length by this adjusted drop length and round down to find the usable drops per roll.
Half-drop, offset and other match types can use a different cutting sequence. The quick estimate assumes plain paper only and a 10% allowance. Ask the supplier or installer for a product-specific cutting schedule when the label states another match type.
| Roll field | Source | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product and batch | Current label or supplier record | Keeps appearance and supply consistent |
| Roll width | Exact product label | Sets strip width and nominal area |
| Roll length | Exact product label | Sets possible drops and nominal area |
| Pattern repeat | Exact product information | Changes usable length per drop |
| Match type | Product and installer confirmation | Changes alignment and cutting |
| Recommended adhesive | Current product information | Changes supply and compatibility scope |
| Confirmed roll count | Supplier and installer | Provides the order quantity and spare basis |
Keep unopened-return terms and batch availability in writing. A spare roll may help a later local repair, but it should be an explicit owner choice rather than hidden waste.
Keep units and sellable quantities clear
Do not mix metres, feet and square feet in one calculation. Convert the roll width and length to the same unit used for the wall. Keep the source dimensions beside the converted values so another person can check them.
A seller may state nominal roll area, number of panels, mural size or coverage range. These are not interchangeable. Record what can actually be ordered and whether the product is sold as a roll, set, panel or custom print.
| Supplier wording | What to confirm before comparison |
|---|---|
| Price per roll | Exact width, length, pattern and sellable roll count |
| Price per square foot | Whether it describes product, printing, fitting or completed work |
| Mural or panel set | Finished width, height, number of panels and trimming allowance |
| Custom print | Final artwork size, proof, substrate, production quantity and replacement basis |
| Coverage range | Assumed pattern, wall height and excluded waste |
If two products use different roll sizes, compare the whole material quantity required for the same walls. A lower roll price can produce a higher material total when each roll covers less usable area.
How to use the wallpaper rolls
Assumes a 0.53 × 10 m roll with no pattern repeat and 0.10 m trimming per drop. Counts whole drops without deducting openings. Use the short form above for the initial measurement. Check your quotation PDF. Confirm the measurement basis and included work with the vendor before comparing prices.
What should a wallpaper quotation include?
Ask every bidder to respond to the same wall schedule and product reference. A wallpaper quotation should separate material, fitting and work needed to make the wall ready.
| Quotation field | Required response |
|---|---|
| Wall and drawing | Room, wall reference, dimensions and revision |
| Product | Manufacturer, collection, code, batch basis and roll dimensions |
| Quantity | Net area, coverage method, pattern allowance and whole rolls |
| Preparation | Inspection, removal, repair, levelling, primer or named exclusions |
| Installation | Adhesive, fitting, access, cuts, corners and protection |
| Commercial terms | Roll price, area rate, additions, tax, validity and return terms |
| Responsibility | Measurement, product approval, wall acceptance and damage |
| Handover | Inspection, cleaning, spare material and product records |
Wallpaper quotation is a useful search phrase, but a downloaded sample cannot provide a current project price. Replace every sample quantity, product, wall condition and rate. Use the interior quotation guide to compare proposals without rewriting the bidder’s source document.
Compare material and labour on the same basis
One bidder may price rolls and fitting together. Another may quote a roll price while the owner appoints a separate installer. Add preparation, adhesive, delivery, access, protection, removal, tax and unused-roll terms before comparing totals.
Do not divide a complete quotation by wall area and call the result a material rate. Label it as a completed area equivalent only after preserving all inclusions. Wallpaper price per square foot and wallpaper installation cost answer different parts of the budget.
Wallpaper versus paint cost
Compare the full work over the period you expect to use it. Wallpaper and paint do not share one universal life or maintenance result. Wall condition, product, room use, sunlight, moisture, cleaning, installation and later repair all matter.
| Cost question | Wallpaper | Paint |
|---|---|---|
| Product basis | Whole rolls, pattern and batch | Product system, quantity and coats |
| Wall preparation | Required before covering | Required before coating |
| Application | Matching, cutting, adhesive and fitting | Primer, coats, drying and protection |
| Local repair | May need matching spare material and visible joints | May need matching retained paint and blending |
| Later change | Removal and wall preparation may be required | Surface preparation and repainting may be required |
| Comparison total | Material, fitting, additions and tax | Material, labour, additions and tax |
Wallpaper, paint and panelling do not have one universal price order. Use current complete quotations on the same wall. The painting and texture cost guide and wall panelling cost guide provide matching scope checks.
How do pattern, wall shape and room size change wallpaper cost?
A large pattern can reduce usable coverage because adjacent strips must align. Curves, niches, beams, many corners and tight work around fixed items can add cuts and fitting time. A small bedroom wall may need more whole rolls than its area suggests because rolls cannot be ordered as fractions.
| Cost driver | What changes | What to request |
|---|---|---|
| Large pattern repeat | More material can be lost while matching | Confirmed repeat and roll schedule |
| Several walls | More corners and alignment decisions | Wall-by-wall quantity |
| Small isolated areas | Whole-roll rounding can dominate | Product allocation across rooms |
| Openings | Cuts and matching remain even when area is deducted | Written deduction rule |
| Difficult access | Protection, staging or access equipment | Separate access amount |
| Uncertain wall | Investigation or repair before release | Named allowance and approval rule |
Do not order from gross area alone when the product has a repeat. Ask the installer to confirm quantity before purchase and record who carries a shortage caused by an approved calculation.
What happens during approval and handover?
Approve the exact product code and a physical sample where practical. Check the proposed wall under the room’s actual light. Record colour and batch information. A screen image cannot show scale, sheen, texture or the way repeated pattern reads across the full wall.
Inspect the completed work in agreed lighting. Check pattern alignment, joints, edges, corners, cuts, bubbles, lifting, marks, damage to adjoining work and cleaning. Record defects with photographs and due dates rather than accepting a verbal promise.
Keep the accepted product record, batch, final quantity, invoices, care information and any spare material. Record who stores the spare and how it is identified. Link final payment to the inspection and documents stated in the contract.
What should a removal or replacement allowance include?
Wallpaper removal cost depends on the existing covering, adhesive, wall beneath it, access, protection and the finish required afterwards. Do not assume removal leaves a paint-ready wall. Ask the bidder to separate removal, disposal, cleaning, inspection, repair and new preparation.
| Removal stage | Quotation question |
|---|---|
| Protect | Which floors, furniture, fittings and adjoining finishes are covered? |
| Remove | Which walls and covering layers are included? |
| Dispose | Who bags, moves and disposes of removed material? |
| Inspect | Who records the exposed wall and decides the next action? |
| Repair | How are damage and previously hidden conditions priced and approved? |
| Prepare | What accepted state is required for the new wallpaper or paint? |
Keep discoveries outside a fixed replacement price until they can be inspected and defined. Photograph the wall after removal and before repair. If the replacement uses the same pattern, confirm that matching batch material is available; a spare roll does not guarantee an invisible local patch after ageing or exposure.
Wallpaper cost questions
How much does wallpaper cost in India?
There is no dependable universal India price. Use the exact product’s current roll price, verified roll quantity, wall preparation, installation, delivery, removal and tax. Record the city and quotation date. The PDF checker can read the vendor’s itemised quotation; the roll estimate above only checks quantity.
How much does wallpaper installation cost?
Ask for a current written installation rate and its exact area rule. Confirm whether the rate includes adhesive, preparation, cutting, pattern matching, high access, protection, cleaning and tax. An area rate is incomplete until these boundaries are clear.
How much wallpaper is needed for one wall?
Measure the wall and confirm the roll width, roll length, vertical repeat, match type and trimming allowance. Count the full-height drops across the wall. Calculate how many adjusted drops fit on one roll, then round the required rolls up. Ask the installer to confirm the cutting schedule before ordering.
Is wallpaper cheaper than paint?
Not in every case. Compare current complete quotations for the same wall and required finish. Include preparation, material, labour, later repair and removal. Product choice and wall condition can change either total.
Wallpaper cost per sq ft is useful only when the roll coverage, pattern, wastage, preparation and fitting scope match.
